Light & Wire Gallery presents a new solo project by Los Angeles artist Chris Lipomi, Studio Days (Figure and Ground). For the next month, the gallery website will become a portal into the artist’s studio, exploring the private and creative practice with a new video and drawing daily.

For this exhibition, Lipomi opens the doors to his studio, disclosing his routines (often dancing) and the work generated as a result, (often) drawing.

Reminiscent of the early studio based video works of Bruce Nauman, Lipomi reveals his inspiration and his motivation in semi-self aware vignettes taken from time spent at work. The results are stark and quasi-figurative geometric abstractions that maintain a sense of the familiar yet reflect a void. The blackened out shapes are both placed on top of the imagery, and are also simultaneously removed from it. Lipomi creates a medium for the viewer that adds or subtracts their presence from his images.

Such that the drawings are a fleeting daily activity, they will disappear each day to be replaced by another.

Chris Lipomi lives in Los Angeles. Last month he presented his second solo exhibition at Michael Lett in Auckland, New Zealand. His work has been shown extensively in the United States and throughout Europe.
