Light & Wire Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Emilie Halpern entitled Moon.
Emilie Halpern’s work examines seemingly simple treasures and objects with a keen eye for inquiry rooted in human experience. Her evocative and ephemeral works of photography, sculpture and video embrace an ethereal sense of admiration towards love, longing, and wonderment of the world. The work instills a sentiment in which the viewer can bask; like the moon itself, distant, ever changing, yet always present, the ultimate embodiment of romance.
The ability to travel to the moon and to walk on its surface is so unfathomable, that for some the images do not exist as truth, but as trickery. Inspired by the awe and intangibility of the moon, Halpern plays with our ability to believe by transporting her artwork into outer space, beyond the laws of reality or gravity. Asking us: can we believe that one day, we will also experience our bodies floating through the moon’s atmosphere, perhaps in the context of an art exhibition, like the one presented here today.
The exhibition features two new photographs, and a sculpture and sound piece installed on the surface of the moon.
Born in Paris, Emilie Halpern has since relocated to Los Angeles, where she received her BA from UCLA in 1998 and her MFA from Art Center College of Design in 2002. Her work has been shown in group exhibitions that include ACME, Los Angeles; Casey Kaplan, New York; Kate MacGarry, London; Jousse Enterprise, Paris; The Breeder, Athens; Kunstraum Innsbruck, Austria. She has had solo projects with The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Medium Galerie in St. Barthelemy, French West Indies, and The Project Row Houses in Houston, Texas. She is currently preparing work for a two-person exhibition with artist Eric Zimmerman at Art Palace in Houston, Texas that will open in May 2010, and a group exhibition co-curated by Michael Ned Holte & Aram Moshayedi titled “California Dreaming” that will be part of PortugalArte10,Lisbon, Portugal opening in July 2010.
